New Zealand has been working on modernizing the police force for a while now. One of the work of the New Zealand government in this context was to integrate artificial intelligence into the police forces. Artificial intelligence called Ella started to perform the test studies. Ella works at the police station where she welcomes visitors, guides, transferring the collected data to the police and transferring non-emergency phones. Intela AI and Soul Machines are behind the development process of Ella. Erin Greally worked as chief researcher in the development of Ella. Facial data of 26 different people were used to improve Ella’s face. Ella has been developed to realistically use voice, speech and body language. Even Ella’s smile and winking were provided for a more realistic communication. Ella currently serves on a digital screen. Ella, who can greet people across the screen, can conduct a dialogue with appropriate facial expressions. Ella is part of the pilot project to modernize New Zealand law enforcement agencies. Ella’s trial work will take three months. In May, technology performance and usage patterns will be reviewed. If successful, New Zealand will continue to use Ella at the outposts. Along with Ella, New Zealand is also working to modernize the police force. The country has also started using a technology called Police Connect in its modernization effort. Police Connect consists of a digital display that directs people to the call center when needed, while answering frequently asked questions.
