Humanity faced a major threat due to the deadly coronavirus outbreak. The fight against the virus continues all over the world, and the epidemic began to formulate the idea that larger disasters may arise in the future. Github, a web-based storage service for software development projects, plans to maintain open source code for 1000 years. With the project called GitHub Archive Program, the platform plans to keep the source code of 250 technological innovations that will define our civilization for future generations. Github states that the data to be stored will be protected in multiple data formats and locations continuously with multiple copies. The company has partnered with Long Now Foundation, Internet Archive, Software Heritage Foundation, Arctic World Archive, Microsoft Research, Bodleian Library, and Stanford Libraries for long-term storage of open source software. The data to be stored includes many projects such as Facebook, Microsoft, Linux, Netflix, Python, WordPress. In addition, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Lightning Network are among the contents to be protected. The GitHub Arctic Code Vault, where data will be stored, is located in an out of service coal mine in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, close to the Arctic region. The company also benefits from the LOCKSS project, under the auspices of Stanford University.
